He trav-elled extensively, visited many tribes,planted several churches, and oncepreached before King Philip, who treatedhim with disdain. He persuaded many to adopt the customs of civilized life, andlived to see twenty-four of them becomepreachers of the Gospel to their owntribes. His influence among the Indianswas unbounded, and his generosity inhelping the sick and afflicted among themwas unsparing. Cotton Mather affirmed, We had a tradition that the countrycould never perish as long as Eliot wasalive. He published many small workson religious subjects, several of whichwere in the Indian language. His great-est work was the translation of the Bibleinto the Indian language (1661-66), andwas the first Bible ever printed in Amer-ica. It is much sought after by language in which it was written hasperished. He died in Eo.\bury, Mass.,May 20, 1690. The B
