Storm research. Radar dome of an aircraft used in the FASTEX (Fronts & Atlantic Storm Tracks Experi- ment) weather study. The double-beam ASTRAIA/ELDO- RA radar in the dome uses the Doppler effect to monitor air movements in 3 dimensions. The radar beams point at angles of 17 degrees forwards & backwards. They sweep round in circles and can monitor the air along a 10 kilometre track in 60 seconds, too short a time for the weather to change. The FASTEX study is designed to discover what factors turn a normal low-pressure weather system (cyclone) into a storm, and to use these in computer models to improve weather forecasting.
