East of this system of lakes is Teslin lake, the half ofAvhich extends into the province of British Columbia. Thislake is the source of the Teslin or Hootalinqua river. TheISTisutlin river, which rises in the southern ranges of the Fellymountains, flows into Teslin lake on its western shore. The following is the area of several of the largest lakes inthe territory:— Kluane 184 square miles. Laberge 86 Tagish 139 Teslin 245. Prospecting. CHAPTER PLACER MINING. Placer iniiiiiiu, on iiiav lie termed a fairlv extensivescale, was tirst carried uii in the \ukuu Territory in wliat isknown as the Fortymile district, in the year 1894. Beforethis time, however, there had been considerable river-barmininii- on the Lewes and Salmon in 1881 and 1882 and onthe Stewart river in 1885. It was estimated by Dr. Dawson,on information obtained from the miners, that $100,000 wasobtained from the Stewart river durinii the years 1885 and1886, The principal bars on this river were worked ont in afew years, and in 1887 a discoverv of coarse gold was made 33 34 YUIvO^ TEiaUTOJlY on Fortjmile creek, and most of the miners stampeded tothat stream. It has been estimated that during the years 1887and 1888 between 100 and 350 miners were employed on theFortymile river.
