Robert Hooper, who erected this colonial man-sion, though a man of lowly birth, was a wealthymerchant who lived in Marblehead. He pos-sessed great prudence and sagacity, so that he roseto be a man of power and for a period of yearspractically monopolized the fishing industry ofMarblehead. During his life there, he entertainedin a most lavish way, rivalling Colonel JeremiahLee, not only in grandeur of equipage but in liber-ality as well. His name of King was given to [42].
