Liverwort gametophore with archegonia, fluorescence micrograph
Fluorescence micrograph of a leafy liverwort (Lophocolea heterophylla) gametophore consisting of a small shoot and three rows of leaves. Female shoots produce archegonia. Only one archegonium in each cluster is fertilised and begins sporophyte generation. A few archegonia are visible here. The largest has probably just been fertilised. Observed in ultraviolet (UV) light. Magnification: x166 when printed at 10 x 10 cm.
