Open cast Tanzanite miner Mererani Tanzania East Africa


It was the New York jewellers Tiffanys that christened this blue stone and gave it the name Tanzanite when it first appeared on the world market in 1962 Mined in a small area 50km south of Kilimanjaro near the town of Mererani northern Tanzania Most of the stones are mined by a South African mining company however dozens of unofficial mines have been sunk in the hills surrounding the town Unpropped and unlit the mines provide hundreds of young Tanzanians with unpaid work
