African lion in oestrus. Male African lion (Panthera leo) sniffing the rear end of a female to see if she is in oestrus and ready to mate. African lion females are in heat for around a week, during which time they may mate 30 or 40 times a day. African lions range throughout sub-Saharan Africa. They are predatory carnivores and both sexes of the species will hunt prey including wildebeest and zebra. Photographed in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.
