Mechanical appliances, mechanical movements and novelties of construction; a complete work and a continuation, as a second volume, of the author's book entitled "Mechanical movements, powers and devices" ... including an explanatory chapter on the leading conceptions of perpetual motion existing during the past three centuries. 627. DRIVING GEAR FOR A LATHE, change speed gear ontwo vertical shafts beneath the lathe head. The method of connecting motor and spindle is clearly shown. Thearmature shaft is fitted with a bevel pin-ion which drives through bevel reversinggears and a vertical shaft a cone of fivegears which mesh with five loose gears onanother vertical shaft, the latter beingconnected by bevel gears with the lathespindle. By means of a sliding key, oper-ated by a lever at the front of the head, any one of the loose gears may be in-stantly connected to and made to drivethe shaft; thus the speed of the spindleis very readily changed. The spindle isback-geared in the usual manner. Thelever for starting, stopping, or reversingthe spindle is operated by a rod runningthe full length of the bed and withinconvenient reach of the GEARING AND GEAR MOTION, ETC. 241
