Lava tube formation. Image 2 of 2. Cutaway artwork of the formation of a lava tube. Hot, molten rock (lava, yellow) is contained within a tube formed by the cooling and solidifying of the surface layer into solid rock (grey). The lava has broken through the end of the lava tube and spills out as 'ropy' and 'entrail' formations (lower left). These lava flow patterns are typical of pahoehoe lava, a very fluid type of lava found in Hawaii. For the first stage in lava tube formation, see image E390/377.
