Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Legionella pneumophila is Gram-negative, aerobic bacillus (or coccobacillus) prokaryote; the cause of Legionnaires' disease (legionellosis or pneumonia). Legionella pneumophila is widespread in natural water sources and often colonize in manufactured water systems. The bacteria must be inhaled to cause disease. Legionnaires' disease occurs most commonly in the warmer months. Legionella generally infects the lung, causing pneumonia, which is often very severe. The bacteria can also cause a less serious infection that seems more like a mild case of the flu. That form of legionellosis is commonly called Pontiac fever.
