Hog Sphinx aka Virginia Creeper Sphinx (Darapsa myron) larva. This 5th instar caterpillar is on a Wild Grape Vine. Like most sphinx caterpillars the Hog Sphinx prefers to feed and rest in the upside down position usually on the underside of a leaf. The larva of this species feeds on grape, virginia creeper and ampelopsis. This speces ranges from southern Canada to Florida and west to Texas. It is common wherever the food plants are found. This larva was photographed in September in Pennsylvania.
