On this was spread a layerof brushwood or some vegetable matter, to be covered by theflints and gravel. The yellow gravel itself showed a thinwhite layer at the base as if it had been laid on somevegetation. There may have been ditches at the side, but the sandyfilling was not easy to distinguish from the natural subsoil.
