The Norse mythological figure Surtr, the flame giant, sets fire to the world at Ragnarok
In Norse mythology, Surtr, the flame giant, guarded the frontiers of the world called Muspellsheim, the home of elemental fire. Surtr brandished his flaming sword and continually sent forth great showers of sparks, which fell with a hissing sound upon the ice blocks in the bottom of the abyss in front of Muspellsheim. This illustration is based on a painting by Dollman. According to Norse mythology, Ragnarok is the doom of the gods when the universe will be consumed by fire and a new golden age will follow, ruled by the surviving gods. This 1905 illustration shows Surtr with his gleaming sword setting the fire that consumes the world.
