Warning sign on the beach near San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station, California, USA

The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) is located south of city of San Clemente in Southern California, USA. Almost 20% of the electrical power used in Southern California is generated by SONGS. Two operating units use Combustion Engineering pressurized water reactors and generate 2,254 MW of electrical power. The power plant relies on intake of ocean water for cooling so it is situated right on the coast of Pacific Ocean. It is surrounded by San Onofre State Beach, popular with local residents and tourists. Several signs (shown) on the beach declare exclusion zone near the station.
