It is a figure ofHeracles of a good classical type, though with the usual differences of style,which, as I said before, are like the differences between a good translationand an original. What is startling is the ring of barrel-shaped objectswhich appears like a nimbus above the head of the figure. These curiousobjects are supported on a thin rod which rises behind the statuette. Themeaning of them is still far from clear, notwithstanding the amount ofattention bestowed on them by scholars versed in Celtic literature. It ismuch to be regretted that this is so, because these objects are certainlysymbols of some kind which must have conveyed a definite meaning tothe ancient Gauls. They cannot be
