As a game bird it afTords nosport whatever, and an entire flock can be killed beforeIt enters the head of any of its members that it would bea wise thing to take wing and seek some more healthylocality. Of course nothing but the neces-sity of obtaining food for the camp would excuse suchthorough slaughter, for certainly there was no sport inshooting creatures that would not get out of the way,nor rarely make an attempt to fly, and it seemed apity to kill birds for the pot that were so rare in all orni-thological collections. A pair obtained on one of theseoccasions, I am glad to think, is now in the collection ofthe American Museum of Natural History in New males of Franklins Grouse are like their relativesof the other species, pugnacious creatures, attackingalmost anything, and very fearless. This trait is ofcourse exhibited chiefly during the mating season, butthey are quite ready to act on the offensiv
