WiTHERiT, Werner. Witherite, Dana, Fig. 459 Fig. Fig. 4G0. Fig. 462. Phillips, Greg §• Lettsom, Nicol. Rhombic:primary form a right rhombic prism. Oc-curs in crystals, which are nearly, if notalways, compound, and resembling the com-mon form of Quartz, viz. six-sided prisms, terminated by six-sided pyramids; also inglobular, tuberose, botryoidal, stalactiticforms. Also amorphous. Colour generallywhite; sometimes greyish or , sometimes transparent. Lustrevitreous; of fracture resinous. Streak Fracture uneven. Tasteless andpoisonous. H. 3 to 3-5. 4*29 to 4-35. Carbonate of bai-yta, or Ba C=-baryta77-7, carbonic acid 22-3 = 100. BB fuses readily, forming a clear bead, which becomes white and opaque on cool-ing; on charcoal boils violently, becomescaustic, and is absorbed. Soluble in 4304 parts of cold, and 2304parts of boiling, water. Dissolves slowly and with slight effer-vescence in dilute muriatic or nitric acid. Localities. — English.
