Clark 42 PLYMOUTH and SOUTHAMPTON country they ako traded. Indeed in the Middle Ages Southampton presenteda cosmopolitan appearance, for there were seen many Normans, Gascons andFlemings, as well as Venetians. At the time of the survey, many French settledthere, and French Street still recalls these days to the passerby. The history ofthis city, which will always be of the greatest interest to Americans, goes backto the third century, when it was called Clausentum; in 837 the Danes wererepulsed, and in 840 Ethelwulf dated a charter from the Royal town calledHamtun, his successors referring to it as the celebrated place called Heamtun, which shows how important it was in the ninth century. The first authenticrecords in Saxon times call the place Old Hamptun, the word meaning hometown. In 962 it was named Suthamtu
