Everest theodolite. This theodolite is one of several used by British surveyor George Everest (1790-1866) when carrying out his surveys of India. The largest theodolite, specially commissioned by Everest, was a version of the Ramsden Great Theodolite (nearly a metre across at the base). Everest also had smaller theodolites designed for his use. Artwork from 'Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy' (George Frederick Chambers, 1890 fourth edition).
