Concrete is also placed between the webs of the railsand the paving. Figs. 10, n and 12 show temporary woodenties instead of the channels; the latter are of a later develop-ment. In the track construction with ties, especially designed bracechairs are being used, which do away with the tie-rods. Thelatter stretch, and are generally inadequate to hold the rails to gage, and are in the way of paving. The ordinary braces werefound to be inefficient, for the reason that the braces were gen-erally spiked to the ties after the rail was spiked to gage, andthe contact of the brace with the underside of the head, or web,or both, was depended upon to hold the rails to gage. But asneither the spiking nor the contact could be made sufficientlyaccurate they proved unsatisfactory. In the brace chair used
