Cup and Ring Stone, Weetwood Moor, near Wooler, Northumberland

These enigmatic markings are thought to date from the Bronze Age but might even date to the Late Neolithic which translates as some 3000 to 5000 years old. They are usually cut into sandstone outcrops with occasional examples being found on loose rocks used in round barrows, kists or field clearance cairns. Their significance remains a mystery and a matter of intense speculation. Weetwood Moor has a number of examples in close proximity.
