(1791-1795; 1799). The pastorate of Rev. George Duffield, D. D., cov-ered a period of seventeen years and four months. Theerror on the tablet to his memory in the Lecture Roomof the church is evidently due to the fact that the timehas been, inadvertently, reckoned from the date whenthe call was made, August 5, 1771, instead of from thetime when he took pastoral charge of the church, whichwas September 27, 1772. After the death of Dr. Duffield, the church remainedvacant one year and ten months. For this trying ex-perience the trained men in whose hands the churchwas left were fully equal. They had faced the mostperplexing conditions of earnest duty in earlier days,and had, in later years, given themselves to the a few of them had seen leaders fall in battle, andat once knew their duty. The representative of theSession regularly appeared at Presbytery, the Com-mittee did its work, and the pulpit was faithfully sup-plied. The influence of Duff
