It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world's biggest survey of butterflies. Almost 27,000 people took part in 2012, counting 223,000 individual butterflies and day-flying moths across the UK. Sir David Attenborough, President of Butterfly Conservation, Alan Titchmarsh MBE, Mike Dilger and Nick Baker, Vice Presidents of Butterfly Conservation and the actress Joanna Lumley OBE have given their enthusiastic backing to the project and support its operation. The survey is run by the charity Butterfly Conservation, in association with Marks & Spencer as part of their Plan A commitments to encourage sustainable agriculture and help to protect the environment. Source: The wings of the comma butterfly (Polygonia c-album) have a distinctive jagged outline that is unique among the British butterflies. The upper side of the wing is an orange-brown colour, with black and yellowish brown markings, and the lowerside has a white comma-shaped mark. This mark is the origin of the British common name, comma butterfly. The Comma is a common butterfly in the British countryside and is frequently seen in gardens during the autumn when it is attracted to over-ripe fruit. Source: David Measures, Natural History Museum,
