The im-portance oi the subject, and the failure of the attempts ofvarious physicists to repeat Kerrs expeiiments, so tai* as theserelate to solid bodies, have induced me to undertake this inves-tigation. The willing readiness of the Directors of the TeylersiStichting at Harlem to place an apartment and the necessaryinstruments at my disposal has made it possible for me toaccomplish this labour, which, as I hope, has resulted in pro-ving that the doubt of the correctness of Kerrs results wasnot well founded. If I mistake not, Grordon was the first who repeated Kerrsexperiments, and, indeed, in spite of all his carefulness, witha negative result:}:. In a work published subseq
