An earlier name, At The Black Madonna, probably derives from a legend that a Black Madonna statue from a village near Prague was hidden here in a medieval cellar containing a secret prayer room. The house is among at least 300 historic properties in Prague to still display traditional house signs or name plaques.
Prague, Czechia / Czech Republic: this oval Madonna and Child painting adorns the Baroque facade of the House of Our Lady of Succour at Nerodova 36/211 in Malá Strana, the Czech capital’s historic Little Quarter or Lesser Town. The property was built as a Late Renaissance burgher house on the foundations of a medieval house destroyed by fire in 1541. It was rebuilt and enlarged after 1630 and then gained a Baroque front some time before 1728. The House of Our Lady of Succour is among at least 300 historic properties in Prague to still display traditional house signs or name plaques, with some of the most notable examples on display on the facades in Nerodova. The house was formerly known as At The Black Madonna, a title derived from a legend that a Black Madonna statue from the village of Světice, southeast of Prague, was hidden in its medieval cellar, said to have contained a secret prayer room. The title House of the Black Madonna is now held by the department store at Celetná 34/569 in the Old Town designed in 1911 by Czech Cubist architect Josef Gočár. He incorporated into the building a Baroque 17th century stone Black Madonna statue, the house sign of the property previously on that site, with the statue standing at first floor level on the northeast corner behind a golden grille. The original statue has since been replaced by a modern sculpted copy.
