Messier 106 is a spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici (The Hunting Dogs) and lies million light years from Earth. Messier 106 contains 400 billion stars and has a thin, slightly warped disk, that appears almost edge-on, which surrounds the galaxy's central region. Messier 106 emits powerfully in the visible, microwave, X-ray and infrared wavelengths and studies have shown the presence of an active supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. Charles Messier, the 18th century French astronomer, catalogued over 100 galaxies and clusters. Through the telescopes available at the time, comets, nebulae, globular clusters and galaxies appeared just as faint, diffuse blobs. This image was taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based images.
