Count Xavier de Maistre was bom in the Savoyard town ofChamWry in 1764. The family to which he belongedwas French, noble in lineage, and has become doubly illus-trious in the name and person of Count Joseph de Maistre,the senator, the ambassador, the eminent political writer, andof his younger brother, Xavier. The younger count showed from his earliest youth a talentfor art, and acquired a well-deserved reputation in Italy andRussia as a painter of portraits. Early in life he entered themilitary service of the King of Sardinia, and spent his youthin Piedmontese garrisons, with scarcely a thought of literaryactivity.
