The pure white feathers of a Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) polluted by oil. South Coast, UK

This Swan had swum through an oil slick and completely covered its feathers in the discharge. Clearly in distress, it was ingesting the oil and destroying its plumage in a futile attempt to clean its feathers. Animal rescue services had been called.
