Gland of Serres.—Salter, in his Dental Pathology and Sur-gery, quotes Serres, who assigns the function of a gland to theepithelium lining the gingival space. This, the writer believes,is the first reference to an appearance in the tissues that hasbeen called the gland of Serres. It has long been noted thatthe epithelium lining the gingival space was lighter in struc-ture, composed of larger cells, and had no horny layer on its GLAND OF SERRES 311 surface, as is true of the epithelium on the outer surface ofthe gingivus. Upon the proximal surfaces the projections Fig. 240 Fb ?Ec Ec .Cm. (About468 X) of the epithelium which extend down between the papillae ofconnective tissue, which constitute the stratum papillaris, are specially long, and in the connective tissue between 312 THE PERIDENTAL MEMBRANE them collections of small round cells are often found. Itis between these projections of epithelium that the cords ofepithelial cells which have been described are lost, and tothis portion of the tissue Dr. Black has again called attention, Fig. 241
