The welt consists of two or threecourses of short stitches and is made by allowing the dial needles toproject only about half the usual distance so as to hold their loops with- S&l 234 KNITTING out knitting; or in other words so that the loop already in the hook isallowed to slip back only far enough to open the latch and let the yarncarrier feed one or more loops into it, thus forming a separate tubularplain fabric for a few courses. It is customary to knit a course of long loose stitches somewhatless than a half an inch from the welt, so that when the continuousstring of ribbed tops are cut apart, the loose stitches may be easilytransferred on to the needles of the stocking machine. The loose or 2»2 KNITTING 235 slack course is made in the fabric by means of the cylinder needles,actuated by a movable cam in the cam ring, which is conti oiled by apattern wheel.
