One of the most important industries in Brockville is that of The Rathbun Com-pany, wholesale and retail dealers in lumber, lath and shingles, anthracite and bitumin-ous coal, cement, lime, tile, etc. ^ This company is easily the largest concern of its kindin the Dominion. With headquarters at Desoronto, and various branches through-out the country, the volume of trade controlled by them is enormous. In Deso-ronto about 2500 hands are employed in their large saw mill and sash and doorfactory, cement works, terra cotta and chemical works and flour mills, while a numberof steamers and barges and 100 miles of railway, belonging to the company, areused in transporting their goods.
