Magellan passing in the Magellan strait. Early 20th Century artwork depicting the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) passing through the stretch of water later named after him. The Strait of Magellan is a navigable sea route immediately south of mainland South America and north of Tierra del Fuego. In 1520, Magellan became the first European to navigate the strait during his global circumnavigation voyage.
