Cilium and flagellum structure, artwork. Cilia and flagella (collectively known as undulipodia) are hair-like protrusions from a cell membrane. They have the same structure, but cilia are generally shorter and more numerous. The core, or axoneme (left), contains 20 microtubules (white and yellow circles), arranged as a central pair surrounded by nine other pairs, or doublets. Attached to each outer doublet are two dynein arms (red). Dynein is a motor protein that converts chemical energy into a sliding movement that causes the undulipodium to beat. At the base is a basal body, which is made of of nine triplets of microtubules around a hollow centre.
