A silver Denarius issued in 138 AD by Antoninus Pius as Caesar.
Produced under Hadrian, the title Caesar indicates Antoninus was Hadrian’s chosen successor. Antoninus went on to be a successful Emperor, with a long and peaceful reign from 138 to 161 AD. This coin is still high grade silver and once again the Emperors portrait reflects the die engravers skill. The obverse features a portrait of Antoninus Pius and lists his titles and names; IMP T AEL CAES HADRI ANTONINVS. Imperator (Commander) Titus Aurelius Caesar Hadrianus Antoninus. The reverse features the goddess of crafts and trade, Minerva. The lettering reads AVG PIVS P M TR P COS DES II and means the dutiful Emperor with a list of his offices, Pontifex Maximus, Tribune and Consul.
