My present position was offered to me, I did not ask for it. If nearly two years service in the same did not give sufficient proof of my capacity and efficiency as Field Officer, so that you think it necessary, to have those qualities tried first by a board of examination, I most respectfully decline to submit to such an examination as not in my conformity with my sense of honor, and therefore I tender hereby my resignation as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Rgt Arty Mo Vols. I am last paid up to the 30th of June 1863 by Paymaster Major Cleveland. I am not indebted to the Government nor responsible for any Government property. Very Respectfully your obedient servant J.
