THE COLLECTORS GUIDE. Bow China. (Figures.) By H. W, Lewee. There were some clever men who modelledfor the Bow concern, and they produced seveialspirited figures.—Xollekens and his times. The earliest porcelain factory in this coun-try is ascribed to Bow, which dates back to1741, if not earlier. The works, althoughnamed Bow, were in the parish of StratfordLangthorne, Essex, not in Bow, which is onthe opposite side of the River Lea. The exactsite of the factory was discovered in 1867,when excavations were being carried on, quan-tities of broken moulds and fragments of chinabeing unearthed. These fragments have beenof great service in assisting in the identifica-tion of many doubtful pieces of Bow name for the factory was NewCanton, as it was supposed to have been builtfrom a model of a Canton factory, but thisrequires verification. • It is not known who were the first pro-prietors, but Edward Heylin, a merchant ofStratford-le-Bow, and Thomas Frye, a painterof West Ham
