The Veste Heldburg was a high medieval hill fort that was rebuilt as a palace in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. At the beginning of the 14th century the castle was owned by the Counts of Henneberg-Schleusingen. In 1374 the Heldburg fell to the Wettins. The German Castle Museum, which opened in September 2016, is located on the fortress.
