View of Stanley Promenade, from rocks at the eastern rim of Stanley Bay, Stanley, Hong Kong, China

Stanley, on the south coast of Hong Kong Island, is named after Lord Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies at the annexation of Hong Kong in 1842. Stanley, now a pleasant escape from the population centres on the north side of the island, was the administrative centre of Hong Kong before this was moved to Hong Kong Central, some 15km to the north west. It witnessed the last stand of British and Chinese forces, against the invading Japanese, in December 1941. Blake Pier and Murray House, at the left or west end of the promenade, were originally located in Hong Kong Central, before being re-built at Stanley in 2002 and 2007 respectively. A shark net protects recreational activities in the bay.
