Green Castle Iron Age triangular fort on the bank of the Newland's Burn, East Lothian, Scotland, UK, looking S from the B6355 Duns to Gifford road.

Green Castle Iron Age fort, East Lothian, Scotland, UK, looking S from the B6355 Duns to Gifford road. This triangular fort rests on the right bank of the Newlands Burn on the NW slope of Newlands Hill. The inner bank has a deep outer ditch with a natural counterscarp & a less substantial rampart outside that. The entrance is in the W corner (R). The fort is surrounded by the ridge and furrow plough marks of late medieval cultivation & some have suggested the site is a medieval earthwork castle rather than an Iron Age hillfort. Aerial photos taken in 2008 show that the plantation of broadleaf trees has been removed & a large water feature (Tweedale Trout Fishery) created on Newlands Burn adjacent to the NW side of the fort.
