Blue sky view people crossing metal lattice bridge over canalised channel Rio Mapocho towards Mercado de Flores, Santiago, Chile
The Rio Mapocho, flowing from the Andes, splits Santiago in two. It was canalised in the 19th century by President Balmaceda to manage river floods and allow urban development of the river banks. It is considered an ugly river. The bridge here, looking towards Cerro san Cristobal, crosses the river between the Mercado Central and the flower stalls of the Mercado de Flores, in the shade on the far side of the river.
