Looking Down on to a Busy Residenzplatz Square. Salzburg, Austria.

Scanned Fujichrome transparency of a view looking down on to the busy Residenzplatz Square in Salzburg. A Fiaker Carriage is just emerging from beneath the Residenzgalerie. A giant chess board is painted onto the Square with seats for observers. Street stalls display their goods beneath bright coloured parasols and the area is full of tourists and residents enjoying the sunshine. Salzburg is famous for its association with Mozart and can be enjoyed by a ride in one of fourteen historic Fiaker Carriages. These carriages were originally the means of transport for the prince-archbishops. For the past eighty or more years they have also provided tourists with an alternative way of exploring this popular city. The carriage drivers give an interesting commentary full of anecdotes, providing important facts and information about their city. Salzburg has become a victim of its own popularity. In the summer this fascinating city becomes so packed with tourists that its residents avoid their city centre.
