Henry Peter Brougham, Baron Brougham and Vaux, Scottish-born British jurist and politician. Brougham (1778-1868) defended Queen Caroline at her trial (1820). He worked for the establishment of London University, the first Mechanics' Institute and the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge and was a founder of the Social Science Association (1857). In Parliament he assisted in carrying the Reform Bill and introducued legal reforms.
