Drought affected Maddens Creek, Dharawal State Conservation Area, NSW Australia

Dharawal is typical of the type of landscape that surrounds Sydney. Softly undulating with Eucalyptus pepperita forests adorning the many ridges and water courses. Maddens Creek flows through the heart of Dharawal flowing over as can be seem here a sandstone platform. In times of drought many creeks dry up leaving only pools and trickles of water, exposing the underlying strata of rock that characterises this region. Amazing plants thrive in this impoverished harsh environment. My favourite blossoming Leptospermum. I wanted to convey a sense of place, give an idea of the conditions it happily blooms in. So with the glorious clouds and the warmth of the setting sun a chance not to miss, these reflective pools became the lead in lines. There was so much detail in the rock I needed something for the eye to follow to the shrub. Although the composition feels relaxed its designed that once again the Leptospermum is the subject. All parts of the composition emphasize this flowering beauty growing in such harsh conditions. The tall Eucalypt in the background doubles the form without dominating by staying in semi silhoette, it emphasises the srub rather than competes. By using a graduated filter I was able to expose for the rock and shrub, keeping the detail and colour in the sky and darkening the bush behind, further hilighting the Blossoming Leptospermum.
