Portrait Of A Man, c1524. This sitter has an especially commanding presence. He is dressed in somber finery and positioned in front of an arch, perhaps to suggest the carved bust of an ancient Roman, set in a niche. His identity has not been firmly established, but he may be Philip of Burgundy, the bishop of Utrecht and the artist’s primary patron.
