First nuclear submarine, USS Nautilus (SS-571), during initial sea trials. This US Navy submarine was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine. Following its construction and testing, it put to sea under nuclear power for the first time on 17th January 1955. This photograph was taken in the Atlantic Ocean three days later on 20th January 1955. The Nautilus was powered by an S2W naval reactor and carried a crew of 105. Among its achievements was the first submerged transit of the North Pole. It was decommissioned in 1980, and in 2002 it was turned into a museum.
