ALLAN PINKERTON, in many respects the greatest, shrewdest and most successfuldetective the world has known, accompanied President Lincoln from Springfield, Illinois,to Washington in February, 1861. The safety of the person of the President-elect was inhis care, and it would have been an impossibility for an assassin to have harmed , Pinkertons watchful eyes being upon all who approached. The agency he estab-lished is noted for the thorough manner in which it runs down criminals, its roguesgallery is the most complete ever made.
