'A Boy and His Atom', IBM research. Apparatus used to create the IBM Research short film 'A Boy and His Atom'. This one-minute stop-motion animated film was produced by using a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) to move carbon monoxide molecules. This research, carried out at IBM Research-Almaden, California, USA, is aimed at producing denser and more efficient data storage by building devices on the atomic scale. Photographed in January 2013.
