Many of the nuclei enclose one or twonucleoli ; or the nuclei are constricted preparatory to division. Some of the alveoli are so densely rilled with cells, thatintercellular substance can scarcely be discovered ; others maybe found entirely devoid of cells. They contain instead amucous substance, rendered more distinct by addition of water,which makes it contract. It coagulates into membranousthreads when treated with acetic acid, and dissolves in alka-line, solutions. The nuclei often undergo an early retrograde metamorphosis ;sometime
