Speaking of the Redpolls, they were early in the the port-holes I could seethem feeding on the pigweedsthat grew so abundantly allaround the blind. Seeing themeat from divers pigweeds andseeing them eat from some par-ticular spot on a snow pyramidproved to be two distinct obser-vations. They did not care formillet or any patent form ofbird-food. They were the origi-nal consumers of pigweed seed, apparently, and they proposedto stand by this abundant andnourishing diet. When theywouldnt come to the seed I hadselected I was forced to com-promise. This I did by selectingthe most vigorous and statelypigweeds that the farm affordedand sticking them over thesnow pyramid. The pyramidbegan to take on the appearanceTREE sparrow °f a monster pin-cushion. For a. The Boat-Blind in the Snow 339 time the Redpolls found aplenty that I had missed, but I kept cutting and building until most of the weeds had been brought to the blind. Then, late one afternoon while I was watching them, a little group of three flew to the row of pigweeds back of the millet. I snapped the shutter, but the hour was too late, and the images proved to be too faint. However, this was encouraging, for they had come to the weeds on the top of the pyramid. The next day was sunny and I spent it in the blind and made several exposures of the Redpolls. Inside the boat-blind, I was using, forthe most part, fourcameras. A 5x7 and astereo-camera were usedfor making pictures, and two 4x5 cameraswith lenses open andfocused on the feeding-places were used tokeep watch of the birdsthat came. I have foundthat looking out froma dark blind onto snowin sunshine is very a dispute at the pole tiring to the eyes. The use of an open camera by the side of one that makesthe picture
