Richard-Wagner-Platz U-Bahn underground railway station on the U 7 line of the BVG commuter network in Charlottenburg, Berlin

Richard-Wagner-Platz U-Bahn underground railway station on the U 7 line of the BVG commuter network in Charlottenburg, Berlin The station opened on 14 May 1906 as Wilhelmplatz and was the western terminus of the first Berlin U-Bahn line (Stammstrecke). It was designed by Alfred Grenander and in 1935 the station was renamed after the composer Richard Wagner. It was damaged during the Battle of Britain in WW2 but was still connected to Deutsche Oper station. It was closed and demolished in 1970 and the new Richard-Wagner-Platz station opened on 28 April 1978 when the U7 line was extended from Fehrbelliner Platz. The walls feature Byzantine style mosaics of medieval historic figures that were retrieved from a hotel at Potsdamer Platz that was demolished in 1975. The original tunnel was preserved and there is still a direct connection to the U 2 at Deutsche Oper, used solely for maintenance purposes.
